Sacro-Occipital Technique (Blocks) ® (SOT®)

As a specialised and gentle method, Sacro-Occipital Technique (SOT) focuses on the relationship between the sacrum (base of the spine) and the occiput (base of the skull) and their ability to foster the movement of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) around the brain and throughout the nervous system. CSF is the nutrition for the brain that optimises nervous system function.

chiropractic adjustmentSOT also recognises the essential role of normal cranial function in health and disease and therefore addresses cranial and sutural (joints of the skull) issues within the adjustment. SOT consists of a three-category system that is employed to evaluate, diagnose and address dysfunction within the body. Chiropractors will call these category 1, category 2 and category 3, and are used to monitor the progression of dysfunction the patient presents with to improve function within the body overtime.

Our nervous system can only function at its peak when body structures are balanced and our pelvis is stable. This is what SOT aims to achieve.

Who Can Benefit from Sacro-Occipital Technique?

SOT can reduce or eliminate pain or disorders in the following areas:

  • Temporomandibular Joint (jaw)
  • Head
  • Neck
  • Back
  • Pelvis
  • Extremities (foot, ankle, knee, and hip as well as hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder)

What is the main goal of SOT?

While getting rid of pain is important, for sure, eliminating pain isn’t the primary objective of an SOT adjustment. The primary goal of an adjustment, and particularly an SOT, is to normalise the function of the whole body. By restoring the balance of the pelvis and sutures of the skull, normalisation of the nervous system can coordinate normal body function and enhance wellbeing.

Gentle, safe and effective!

SOT works to a great extent by precisely positioning the body to utilise the weight of gravity and the body to correct the body. This is a very gentle low force technique and many people find this very comfortable, and rapidly facilitates the healing and the restored function of the body. If you are concerned about the “popping” noise often associated with chiropractic adjustments, SOT may be a fantastic option for you.
